Workshop fees: $575 per day / 6 hour class, $350 for 3 hour class* Lecture/Slide Show fee: $400* *Fees are subject to change - check before writing contract.
A minimum of $1100 in scheduled workshops and/or lectures is required for any booking that requires airline travel or an overnight stay. Groups are welcome and encouraged to make arrangements with neighboring groups to share costs for minimum fees and travel. It is more worthwhile for me to have more lectures and/or workshops during any one trip.
Enrollment: Workshops should have no more than 20 participants. Special arrangements can be made for a maximum of 25 only if the room and seating accommodations allow for a comfortable situation with plenty of elbow room. There will be a $10 (3 hour) / $20 (full day) charge for each participant over the limit of 20. There is no limit on attendance at lectures.
Transportation & Lodging: The sponsoring group is responsible for the cost of all transportation, lodging and meals during the teaching engagement, including ground transportation and airport parking fees. I live 20 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport. I have a strong preference for staying in hotel rooms, but will accept accommodations in a private home as long as it is a non-smoker's home with no children or cats and I require that a guest bedroom (no sofa beds, please!) and bathroom be provided for my use only during the stay. Another requirement for stay in a private home is that I do not evict any other person(s) from their bedroom during my stay. The sponsor is not expected to pay for personal expenses. I prefer not to have idle days between workshops and/or lectures; if this is necessary we will need discuss the arrangements and there may be additional fees.
Lectures
A Cotton Palette - Picture Quilts
A discussion of quilts as art and slide lecture featuring pictorial and representational quilts. Every picture tells a story and these pictorial quilts range from simple to masterworks, from hilarious to awe-inspiring.
It's Got the Look
Fabrics, chosen with a painterly eye, are used to creatively enhance subject matter—it applies to both contemporary and traditional quilts, but especially to pictorial quilts. We'll look at the fabrics and the resulting pieces that were cut from them. The aim is to gain new approaches and attitudes toward purchasing fabric.

Appliqué for Realism Design Class
Use photos to make patterns for realistic appliqué figures. Class elaborates on the techniques explained in my book, Faces & Places - Images in Appliqué and in it's sequel, Focus on Features - Life-like Portrayals in Appliqué. An intricate and tricky study in appliqué and reverse appliqué, but mastery of the technique is well worth the extra effort. Student's supplies: Basic sewing kit, thread to match, pins, small, fine scissors that cut all the way to the point, removable fabric markers, masking tape, fine black permanent marker. If you have a light box and can bring it, please do so. Several photographs, slides, clippings, etc. of something you would like to be the subject of your quilt - give yourself a wide choice. If you know how large you want the subject of your quilt, make a color copy of your photo and have it blown up to the size you wish to make it on your quilt (life-size is recommended). If you haven't decided on a size, you can use a projector to enlarge it in class. Newsprint or sketch paper - as large as the quilt you will be designing in class, and tracing paper. Fabrics: If you opt to do a provided class project bring: 1/4 yard each of 4 to 6 different gray fabrics (solids only!) ranging from dark to light and all of a similar hue. Include black and white in addition to grays, if desired. Another color besides gray may be chosen, but gray is safe. If opting for another color make sure to have 4 to 6 light to dark values of that color. ½ yd. pastel color (can be print) of your choice for background. Project choices will be Dancer's Head or Anthony the Rabbit from FACES & PLACES book. If you will be designing your own quilt bring fabric appropriate to the size and subject matter of your project - i.e., several shades or values of the colors for any figures, prints and textures where applicable. Teacher's supplies: Slide projector, tray and screen, chalk, chalkboard and eraser, opaque projector (Check to see if one can be borrowed from a library or school—it is not the same as an overhead projector. More than 1 is necessary if a 2 or more day class which has more than 10 students), light boxes—as many as possible—or a room with lots of accessible windows is an acceptable alternative. However, the room, or an adjoining room, needs to be able to be made dark for projectors. Feel free to call and discuss room requirements and/or supplies with me. 2 to 4 day class - Advanced technique but willing beginners are acceptable for class.
Portrait by Machine Workshop

Bring paper large enough for the project you have in mind and fabrics in the amounts, colors and textures appropriate for portraying your landscape in a larger size. Teacher's supplies: Slide projector, tray and screen, chalkboard, chalk and eraser or dry-erase equipment, at least 2 overhead projectors - and it would be most helpful if a small adjoining room is available for a dark room for enlarging designs with the projectors, light boxes - as many as possible - or room with accessible windows is an acceptable alternative. Thank you for looking over my teaching information. If you like what you see and are considering engaging me as an instructor, I'd like to offer a few suggestions:
Appliqué for Realism and Pieced Pictures are my favorite workshops to teach because I consider those my specialties. However, the other workshops offered are also good workshops. Since Appliqué for Realism has complicated subject matter I really do feel that 2 or more days of this class are needed to really get down the technique. Of course, in the 2 or more day format, students can design their own quilts, whereas a project is provided for the 1 day class so the student can work through the layering process.
If you have any questions feel free to call or write me. I am much more efficient when dealing with phone calls.
